Learning Objectives: The learning objective for the students is to be able to identify the characteristics of a Trickster and to understand the ways in which they use their abilities to benefit from their actions.
Materials in use: Powerpoint Presentation & the textbook being used.
Preparation: Students will have previously read the story, “The Treasures of the gods” Page 277 and come up with their own ideas of what they believe the characteristics of a Trickster is and how any of the characters of the story fits into the persona.
Lesson: I (Breeana) will explain how Loki represents the Trickster persona: In the story, Loki is referred to by many names because he presents with so many different characteristics; he is referred to as Loki, Shape changer, Trickster, Sky Traveler, and Sly god. The way in which Loki is portrayed is neither good nor evil, he is simply a schemer. He is an opportunist and trouble maker doing anything he can in order to gain an advantage of power. He is cunning and clever, always coming up with new ways to bring embarrassment to others; even if it means putting himself into compromising situations. This is clear when in the story he chops off the hair of Sif (Thor’s wife) and claims that it was only, “a joke”; he then winks at Thor, with no regret, promising to make it right. After bringing trouble to the lives of others, he often saves them in order to look like the hero. Even after receiving the gifts from the dwarfs, the story states that, “his mouth was full of air, thanks and compliments and promises” expressing that he uses only words to convince those around him. Being that he uses words with no real meaning behind them, he loses a wager with the dwarfs, believing that there will be no consequences but, in fact his mouth is sewn shut and yet he still dreams of his revenge. Loki pays the price for his mischief but never actually learns his lesson.
